The government also appointed collectors of Raigad district and Mumbai Suburban district respectively to hear appeals from any orders passed by the forest settlement officer. They will enquire into and determine the existence, nature and extent of any rights alleged to exist in favour of any person over this land. The government notification of July 7, 2022, said the Panvel sub-divisional officer (SDO), in charge of Uran taluka, Shrivardhan SDO for Mhasala taluka and western Mumbai suburban SDO for Andheri taluka, have been appointed as forest settlement officers.
With the fresh addition, the total notified mangrove area in the state has gone to 19, 479 hectares. Officials said about 1,090 hectares are in Uran taluka, 345 hectares in Mhasala taluka of Raigad district and 27 hectares in Andheri taluka. These mangroves have been notified as reserved forests now by the state government under Section 4 of the Indian Forest Act. The total area is equivalent to roughly the size of 16 Mahalaxmi racecourses. NAVI MUMBAI: The state has notified 1,463 hectares (3,615 acres) of mangroves in Uran taluka, Mhasala taluka in Raigad district and Andheri taluka of Mumbai suburban district.
